For more than 30 years, I have known my eighth-grade teacher, Mrs. Barbara Satterfield, who remains my favorite teacher. After the passage of many years, I still remember myself as a shy, awkward and self-conscious junior high school student. But, most importantly, I recall Mrs. Satterfield's kindness, attention and support. I now realize that it was the nurturing of women like her that helped me have a bigger vision for myself! Mrs. Satterfield and a few other special women encouraged me to step up to service, leadership and to dream big dreams. Through her role-modeling, Mrs. Satterfield taught me the importance of professionalism, excellence, and compassion.
I'm still amazed that she has remembered me all of these years, and that she always takes the time to encourage and support me. Knowing that during her teaching career, she encountered hundreds of students, I feel extremely special that she remembers me.
A few weeks ago, I was honored with a community service award, highlighting my professional achievements and community work. While it is always remarkable to receive special recognition, this event was phenomenal given that Mrs. Satterfield nominated me. This photo captures the special night, and truly depicts the importance of a supportive community. In my brief comments, I shared that I am grateful to have reaped so many benefits from having a large network of supporters, including family members, friends, teachers, and colleagues.

Likewise, community is at the heart of the success at Compton College. During my service on the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees, I have witnessed the incredible collaboration between students, faculty, administration, residents and legislators. I am proud to have been there to be a part of the historic move to regain local control, college accreditation and increasing educational access for local high school graduates. AND YET, there is still more to do!!!
For that reason, I am seeking election as Area 2 Trustee to the Compton Community College District. Since my board appointment in November 2016, I am currently Board President and remain committed to serving the needs of students and the community.
